4-29 Update: Resolution passes unanimously
(WGTD)---The federal immigration crackdown and what it should mean for Kenosha Unified will be up for discussion at Tuesday night's school board meeting.
If approved, a resolution titled "Safe Student" will direct the administration to develop new internal guidelines to follow if ICE or a cooperating law-enforcement agency arrive at a school unannounced. In addition, the district would be directed to collaborate with local community-based organizations, legal-service providers and social service agencies to assist students and families that might be affected by the crackdown.
The resolution's authors also want the district to follow existing policy and procedures on notifying emergency contacts or child services.
The resolution's preamble states that the U.S. Supreme Court has held that no public school district has a basis to deny children access to education based on their immigration status.
The resolution goes on to note that while the district recognizes the "potential" for ICE to conduct enforcement efforts it's the policy of KUSD "not to allow any individual or organization to enter a school site if the educational setting would be disrupted..."
The resolution would direct administration to protest "to the fullest extent permitted" if ICE agents try to enter a building for enforcement purposes without a judicial warrant.
The resolution is the outgrowth of meetings that School Board member Yolanda Adams has had with various community groups. It was placed on the school board agenda upon the request of at least four board members.
Tuesday night's meeting begins at 7 and is streamed on the district's YouTube channel.
