(WGTD)---An ambitious, $130 million project to remove some 10,000 lead water pipes between the street and homes in the older sections of Racine was highlighted Wednesday.

At an event on High St. that was orchestrated by Mayor Cory Mason, crews demonstrated for news cameras what’s involved in pulling out an old line and replacing it with a safe one.

Said Mason: "This is public health work. This is about safe drinking water. This is an environmental justice project. This is our commitment to follow through on our promise to remove all of the lead pipes in our community because we know there is no safe level of lead for children to consume."

The five-year-long project is being covered by state and federal grants and loans.

There’s no charge to water customers.

In his comments, Mayor Mason urged residents to cooperate with the workers as they go through their neighborhoods.

Speakers said the City of Racine is doing much more than most municipalities in tackling the lead line problem.
