(WGTD)---The City of Racine’s population has been sagging in recent years. So when Mayor Cory Mason heard about a program that could help turn things around he jumped at it.
The city is expected to apply for a state grant to help fund a campaign to draw people to Racine. "We're really excited about the opportunity to recruit people to the City of Racine," Mason said at a recent city council committee meeting. "Some of our biggest advocates for the city are people who've moved here recently."
If a grant application for $250,000 is approved, then the city will put up $50,000 in matching funds to work with a company called Make My Move. The company will set up a web page for Racine and do other promotional work.
The goal is to get 10 households to move to Racine from out of state over a 12-month period.
Company salesman Scott McCauley told the city council’s Finance and Human Resources Committee that his firm has a 90% retention rate. "You sell Racine. You sell the cost of living. You sell the lake life. You sell all of the new developments. And when they move in they say I want to be a part of this community," McCauley said.
The Indiana-based Make My Move has 150 programs in 14 states.
