(WGTD)---A Kenosha man who allegedly threw a brick at a Kenosha police officer, knocking him out, in the early stages of the Jacob Blake demonstrations has struck a plea bargain.
29-year-old Ashton Howard has signed a statement indicating that he'll plead guilty to a charge of Obstructing Law Enforcement During a Civil Disorder. A plea hearing in federal court has been scheduled for Sept. 23rd.
The agreement calls for the government to recommend a five-year-prison term. That's the maximum for the offense.
A firearms-related charge will be dismissed.
The officer was knocked unconscious as a hostile crowd gathered near the scene of the Blake shooting two years ago.
Video shows the officer being hit in the head and collapsing to the ground. The officer was immediately assisted by other officers and taken to the hospital. He eventually returned to duty.
According to the plea document, multiple cameras recorded the event. One video shows a man holding a brick, and after the officer was hit, loudly boasting that he was responsible for the attack. The distinctive-looking face mask and clothing that the man was wearing was found in a search of where Howard was staying and in the vehicle he was driving.
