(WGTD)---The Racine School Board took a step back this week from the hot issue of student use of cell phones while in school.
The board has had several long discussions on whether to go a step or two further than a new state law that bans the use of cell phones by students while in class. Some board members support what’s termed a bell-to-bell ban.
Monday night the board brought in a consultant to help it determine whether it should be more concerned with achieving outcomes than with dictating specific policies and procedures for Superintendent Soren Gajewski to follow.
Gajewski framed the issue another way. "Is it the desire here to remove the distraction of the phone from the learning experience or is it to take away that cell phone because the cell phone itself has consequences on student maturation and growth and development?" Gajewski asked rhetorically. "One is specific to instruction. The other one is saying 'I'm going to try to get cell phones out of your lives.' And that one is a bigger lift."
No conclusions were reached, and more discussion is expected.
