More Surgeries Now Involve the Use of Robots

Kenosha---Patients who undergo successful surgeries often times have a robot to thank.

At St. Catherine’s Hospital in Kenosha, about 40% of the surgeries are now performed by doctors sitting at a computer console and controlling rods attached to pincers that do the actual cutting and positioning. Doctors say the machines can be more precise than a surgeon's hand operating by itself, and can be used effectively to reach tight spots.

Advances in technology have increased the number of procedures that now routinely rely on robots. At St. Cat's these days, almost all hernia surgeries are done with the help of a robot.

Speaking to reporters at a recent demonstration, surgeon Mustafa Badrudduja advised anyone in need of a surgery to ask questions beforehand.

He says robotic surgery is the biggest new development in surgical medicine since laparoscopy.  But not all hospitals and surgery centers are equipped with robotics.
