New Foxconn-Related Program to Help Fund Worker Training and Wages

The City of Racine has put together a coalition to fund a program designed to give residents the skills they need to take advantage of what’s expected to be a boom in construction-related jobs brought on by Foxconn.

"It is our job and our commitment today to swing wide the doors of opportunity so every one has a shot to the jobs that are coming to the area," said Mayor Cory Mason. The city's water utility alone is expected to spend over $100 million in the coming years.

A new program called “Racine Works” is funded in part by the city itself, the state Department of Workforce Development, United Migrant Opportunity Services and the Gateway Technical College Foundation.

The partners have committed a total of $1.5 million to subsidize training programs and the wages of some of the newly-trained workers themselves.

The city’s half-million dollar share was previously announced.

Other partners include Big Step and First Choice Pre-Apprenticeship Program.
