(WGTD)---A progressive congressman from California says he believes the drastic cuts put in place at federal agencies by the Trump administration won’t stick if enough people complain.
Democrat Ro Khanna was the headline speaker at a rally on Kenosha’s lakefront Sunday--Mother's Day-- that drew a couple hundred people. It was organized by ‘Friends of Bernie Sanders’ and titled "Moms Over Billionaires."
Khanna has been making appearances in congressional districts around the country that were narrowly won last November by Republicans. His goal is to try to build pressure against Republican congressmen. "I believe if we start to speak out in these red districts that Republicans only won by one or two points, some of them are going to stand up and say no we can't cut these benefits for the sake of billionaires and can't hurt our communities," he said.
Khanna said Democrats need to propose alternative solutions to what Republicans are doing.
During a question and answer session at the end of his speech, Kenosha resident Liz Whitlock went a step further and questioned just how Democrats and independents are going to go about building unity. "We need you and all of the powers that be in the Democratic Party and the independents to come together to put something together that can be publicized so that people can see the difference," Whitlock said. "It's gotta happen."
Khanna had no direct response to Whitlock’s statement and question, other than to say Democrats and independents need to mobilize and fight back.
