Proposed KUSD Policy Revision Concerns LGBT Community

Dec. 15, 2022 3:15p

(WGTD)---A policy revision brought forth by a conservative member of the Kenosha School Board prompted a large turnout of L-G-B-T students and their supporters at this week’s board meeting.

Board member Kristine Schmaling wants the board to consider tightening the district’s policy on advertising and promotion. In jeopardy could be the Pride and Black Lives Matter flags.

Adrian Wick is a 15-year-old student and non-binary. “As a non-binary person, there’s a certain security you feel when you go into a teacher’s classroom and you see that they have a Pride flag somewhere in their classroom,” Wick told the board. “It makes you feel safe.”

Others said the Pride flag isn’t a political statement and shouldn’t be treated as such.

Max Martin is a former K-U-S-D student who’s pursuing a teaching degree and is scheduled to student teach in the district next year. “I’m a transgender man,” Martin said. “And my gender is not a controversial political statement. It is who I am. I will not be revised out of existence,” he said.

As requested by administration, the board voted to send the issue to one of its committees for a fuller discussion next month. No date was set.
