The hunt for workers to fill Foxconn-related jobs has begun. One of the first opportunities is in the area of road construction.
Gateway Technical College has teamed up with Wisconsin Regional Training Partnership to offer a 20-day, employment readiness program.
Four students graduate this Friday from the program's first cohort, as the coalition gears up to offer a second session starting next week.
"What we're seeing is this opportunity for people in our area to get into these jobs that really weren't there in the past," says Steve Whitmoyer of Gateway’s construction sciences group.
The boot camp-styled program is called TrANS+. While completion doesn't guarantee a job in the road construction industry, the skill sets that are taught give students a leg up in the job application process. Completion also leaves the student with seven academic credits that can be applied to a Gateway associate degree.
Whitmoyer says the second session--starting Monday, June 11th-- was timed to coincide with the end of the K-12 school year in order to appeal to graduating seniors. The training program is free for those who qualify for admission.
