(WGTD)---A Racine school board member who intended to seek re-election but failed to submit properly completed paperwork is off the spring ballot. The screw-up prompted administration to extend the filing deadline in the 2nd district to Friday at 5 p.m.
A nominating petition submitted by incumbent Scott Coey was rejected by the district. In such a situation, state law allows for the district to re-open the ballot process and set a new deadline. No other candidate other than Coey had indicated an interest in running.
While not on the ballot, Coey could conceivably run as a write-in.
Coey’s district runs northeast of the intersection of Green Bay Rd. and Durand Ave. It’s roughly bordered on the north by Highway 20 and on the east by Taylor Ave.
Coey couldn’t be reached for comment Wednesday evening.
While the election isn’t until spring, the board already has a new member.
In the 3rd district, a pastor at Covenant Presbyterian Church was the only candidate to meet Tuesday evening's filing deadline. Sarah Walker Cleaveland will replace Dulce Cervantes-Contreras, who decided against seeking a full term. Cervantes-Contreras was appointed in 2021 to fill a vacancy.
The only other seat up for re-election on the nine-member board is currently held by Brian O'Connell. He filed on time and will be the only candidate on the ballot in the 7th district.
In Kenosha Unified, school board president Yolanda Adams will face challenges from former board member Tony Garcia and from newcomer Lamar Madison. The three-way race necessitates a primary which will be held Feb. 21st.
Garcia announced in 2021 that he wouldn't seek re-election when his term expired in spring of 2022. Garcia told WGTD Wednesday night that he decided to run again after receiving requests from parents.
