(WGTD)---The leader of Democrats in the state Assembly says there’s still room for serious state budget talks despite a declaration last week of an impasse in discussions between Gov. Evers and Republicans who control the legislature.
Speaking on WGTD's Morning Show, Greta Neubauer of Racine said the narrowing of G-O-P majorities in both the Assembly and Senate last November has led to a thaw in partisan relations.
Even so, Republican leaders say the state can’t afford Gov. Evers’ spending proposals on K-through-12 and post-secondary education, and childcare services.
Neubauer says informal conversations between legislators are continuing, but that formal talks are needed. "We certainly are still very much in this process and there's still time for our Republican colleagues to come back to the table and work with us and the governor," she said. "But we will not be supporting a budget that doesn't make those necessary investments in education and lower costs for families across the state."
To boil it down, the main issue appears to be a disagreement over how much of the state’s $4.3 billion surplus should be returned to taxpayers versus what percent should be allocated to addressing the state’s needs.
