July 6, 2026 3:30p

From WGTD News:

The three children who died in Geneva Lake during Friday afternoon's storm had been trapped underneath their capsized boat, according to Geneva Lake Police. A fourth child and six adults were rescued by first responders. The victims were residents of Fontana, WI and two Illinois towns--Batavia and Wheaton.

A news release issued Monday afternoon describes what happened: The operator of the 25-ft. boat--described as a 47 year-old man with extensive boating experience--was unable to find a safe harbor as the storm approached. Using his training, he then turned directly into the wind. Despite his efforts, the boat was hit by at least three large waves which caused it to take on water, roll, capsize and quickly sink in 32 ft. of water.

Divers removed the trapped children, ages 10, 7 and 6, and brought them to the surface.  Attempts to revive them were unsuccessful. The investigation has determined that all of the children had been wearing properly-fitted life jackets. The boat--described as a 2024 Nautique--has a capacity of 19 passengers.
