Vigil Held at Site of Racine Police Shooting

May 11, 2025 8:10p

(WGTD)---A prayer vigil was held Sunday evening near the site of a fatal police shooting in Racine last week.

As neighbors went about their business, about a dozen members of the Racine Interfaith Coalition and their supporters gathered at 17th and Franklin.

The vigil was led by the Rev. Yeprem Kelegian who noted it was the first such gathering of the year in Racine. "Thank God it's the first, but it's still a tragedy for the family and probably for the police officer that did the killing. There is hurt and pain on both sides," he said. "I don't have a lot of details on exactly what happened, but we do know that a child of God died."

The name of the man shot by police has not yet been made public. No family members were present at the vigil.

Police said shortly after the shooting that the deceased had been wanted in connection with a violent domestic abuse assault. Following a short chase, the man purportedly raised a handgun that he’d been carrying. That’s when at least one officer opened fire.

No additional details have been released.
