Wait List Expected to Materialize Soon for Racine County's 'Meals on Wheels' Program

Dec. 10, 2025 8p

(WGTD)---Racine County has put out the word that funding has become tight in its 'Meals on Wheels' program.

It's estimating that dozens of new applicants for the program will wind up on a wait list next month because funding through the government's Older Americans Act hasn't kept pace with either inflation or the growing number of older adults who are eligible for the program.

According to a news release, the situation isn't unique to Racine County.

Racine County's program is administered by the county's Aging and Disability Resource Center. Center staffers are expected to take a closer look at the applications as they come in in order to identify all possible alternative supports, such as food pantries, FoodShare and community meal sites. They emphasize that no one will go hungry because of the funding shortage.

According to the release, over 95,000 meals were delivered last year. Nearly one in five Racine County residents is 65 or older.

The program is accepting monetary donations on the county's website. Local contributions reportedly can unlock matching funds.

The ADRC is also looking for additional volunteer drivers.
