(WGTD)---‘No Swimming’ signs will be installed soon at Carre-Hogle Park, the site of a Lake Michigan drowning in July.
Shaylani Williams was swimming with friends off of Carre-Hogle Park when she went under in strong currents. She was pulled from the lake by firefighters about 15 minutes after the call came in and was pronounced dead at the hospital.
The beach at Carre-Hogle is a sliver of sand adjacent to the small park itself which is at the end of a dead-end street at the bottom of bluffs that overlook the lake.
At this week’s Racine City Council meeting, Shaylani’s grandmother, Liz Villalobos, pushed for signage. "Sheylayni was only 15 years old," she said. "Shalayni didn't know there were beach hazard warnings and hazardous beach conditions. Shaylayni and her friends just wanted to go swimming."
Her friends who live near the park regularly waded into Lake Michigan there, she added.
Although it’s not posted, the beach is not recognized by the city as one that’s suitable for swimming. Nor is it protected by lifeguards, as are both North Beach and Zoo Beach on the city's north side.
A Racine city hall spokesperson said this week that both signs and safety rings have been purchased and will be installed as soon as they come in.
Shaylani was to have been a sophomore at Horlick High School this year.
