AUDIO: Emotions Boil Over During Racine City Council Insurance Discussion

Sept. 18, 2019 11:55a

(WGTD)---A Racine alderman was gaveled down by Mayor Cory Mason Tuesday night during a debate on whether the city should impose a high-deductible health insurance plan and make other changes that would affect both active employees and retirees.

The city needs to come up with over $5 million to close a gap in next year's budget.

Administration's benefits proposal would save over $2 million.

Some Council members complained about perceived inequities in the administration's proposal, inlcluding a provision that treats city employees who live within the city's boundaries a bit differently than those who live in neighboroing communities.

Ald. Jeff Coe wound up apologizing for the language he used when complaining about divisions within city government.

In the end, the council put off a decision for two weeks.
