KUSD Referendum Planning May Continue Despite New Legislature

Nov. 4, 2026 3:15p

(WGTD)---Kenosha Unified Superintendent Jeff Weiss says he’s recommending that the school board continue the planning process for a possible April funding referendum, even though voters on Tuesday elected what would appear to be a more public education-friendly group of legislators.

"The candidates who won were candidates who stated they would be interested in making education funding a priority, so that's always great to hear," Weiss told WGTD Wednesday. But just how that support will translate into extra dollars for public schools won't be known for some time.

The new legislature won't convene until January, around the time that the school board would have to make a firm decision on whether to schedule an April referendum.

As a result of the election, Democrats will have majorities in both the Assembly and Senate. A Democrat—David Crowley—will retain control of the governor’s office when Tony Evers steps down at the end of the year.

The Kenosha School Board is scheduled to meet Thursday night. The agenda includes more discussion on the referendum possibility along with the rollout of the results of a study on staffing.
