City of Racine Shares in VW Settlement

(WGTD)---Volkswagen's loss is the City of Racine's gain.

Racine will be receiving a $6.2 million dollar grant to buy at least six battery-powered buses.

The money comes from a $2.9 billion settlement that Volkswagen agreed to pay as the result of intentionally misreporting emissions on vehicles. Wisconsin's share was $67.1 million. About half of that amount is going to 9 municipal bus operations and a county-wide bus service run by Milwaukee County.

In a news release, Racine Mayor Cory Mason said the grant will help the city replace some of its aging buses.

The funding will also cover the cost of charging stations and other infrastructure upgrades.
