Mt. Pleasant---Some laid-off employees of a company that suddenly went out of business say they’ve been robbed of their last paychecks.
According to a report in the Journal Times, former employees of Promotions Unlimited say a payroll contractor reversed their last direct deposits---pulling paycheck money back out from employee personal checking and savings accounts.
The workers surmise that the contractor disbursed the money before realizing that they hadn’t received the funds themselves from the now-defunct company---and then scrambled to try to get the money back.
Some of the workers got wind of the attempted maneuver in the nick of time, and persuaded their financial institutions to interrupt the payroll company’s withdrawal attempt.
State Senator Van Wanggaard’s office is reportedly looking into the matter.
