Work is moving at a brisk pace to turn the old YMCA/KYF building in downtown Kenosha into a 49-unit apartment building.
“Residences at Library Park,” located at 720 59th Street, will feature studio, one, two, and three-bedroom units. 42 out of the 49 units will be rented as “affordable housing” for lower income residents under “Section 42.” Rents of the Section 42 units will range from $309 per month to over $1,000 a month for the two and three bedrooms. Seven “market rate” units will be available. Rents have not been determined for those apartments.
The owner of the building received grants and tax credits, including a $2 million WEDC historic restoration credit. In order to comply with the tax credit’s requirements, parts of the 1920’s-era building will remain unchanged, leaving some apartments with exposed brick walls, while a gym floor—markings and all—will be visible in other units.
A second gym will remain untouched and be available for use by residents. Some of the original window frames will stay, after weatherization steps are taken.
The YMCA/KYF building closed to the public in 2009. The YMCA now serves the Kenosha area at a new west side location.
“Residences at Library Park” will begin taking security deposits in October with initial move in dates targeted for November.
