(WGTD)---Construction of Foxconn’s huge complex in Mt. Pleasant is ahead of schedule, according to the project manager for the village, Claude Lois.
"When you go back to our development agreement that the village has with Foxconn, they weren't even supposed to start construction until this year," Lois said on Thursday's Morning Show with host Greg Berg.
Instead, the first building--designed to house a variety of functions--is ready for occupancy and the foundation has been laid for the second building, Lois said. In addition, 3.5 to 4 million cubic yards of dirt have already been moved, he said.
Lois was joined on the program by Village President Dave DeGroot and Village Administrator Maureen Murphy to talk about Foxconn.
At the beginning, DeGroot was asked about his first reactions in April 2017 when state officials brought forth the project's parameters for consideration by the village. "The numbers were stupefying," DeGroot said. "We'd never seen anything like this before. I thought that maybe there was a misprint and that we were off by a couple of decimals," he said.
DeGroot said the consensus of local officials early on was that going after Foxconn wasn’t something that could be ignored, given the area’s relatively high unemployment rate.
