(WGTD)---Democratic State Representative Greta Neubauer of Racine will be making history next week. She’s expected to become the first female Assembly Speaker in the state’s history.
As a result of the election, Democrats will gain full control of the legislature for the first time in some 16 years.
In recording Monday's Morning Show, Neubauer said she has the support of her colleagues to win election to the post when her caucus meets Tuesday for the first time since the election. Neubauer has served her party over the past four years as minority leader.
Assembly Democrats plan to meet weekly through December to be as prepared as possible when the legislature convenes in January. "We want to get things done quickly," Neubauer told WGTD's Greg Berg. "We can't waste a moment of this opportunity. We only have this trifecta for two years then we run again. Of course we hope to continue governing in the years ahead but we understand that this is our moment and we need to use this opportunity to set Wisconsin on a new path. We're going to be working hard every day."
Top priorities will be affordability issues, including education funding to ease the burden on property taxpayers.
Democrats will control the Assembly, 53-47 and the Senate, 18-14. The election of David Crowley as governor means Democrats will hang on to that branch of government.
The full Morning Show interview airs Monday at 8:10 and then will be archived. .
