(WGTD)---A trio of teenagers has been charged with weapons violations after they were arrested Tuesday evening near a vigil for a 17 year-old who was murdered several days earlier.
Ledell Byrd, Jr. and Derrick Jones were accused of possessing automatic handguns while Trayvion Marshall allegedly had in his possession components of a gun. Bond for Marshall was set Wednesday at $2,500 while the other two are being held on bonds of $10,000.
According to the criminal complaint, police officers were in the area of Lockwood Park for a balloon launch and a candle lighting ceremony in memory of Samarion Campbell, a 17 year-old Horlick student who was shot in the park during a large gathering early Sunday morning and later died.
The three teens who were charged Wednesday had drawn the attention of an officer because they had entered the park through the adjacent cemetery and not the park entrance. Also, they were wearing dark clothing, had their hoods up and in some cases had masks on. They walked over to a Uber and got inside before driving off. Observing that the passengers weren't wearing seatbelts, an officer performed a traffic stop and that's when the guns were discovered.
A 16 year-old boy who remains hospitalized with his own gunshot wounds was fingered by police as the gunman who killed Campbell. .
