Kenosha Fire Injures a Child

Kenosha---A child was pulled from a burning apartment building in the uptown area Sunday evening and taken to the hospital. Her condition wasn't immediately known.

A fire department official says the blaze broke out in a second-floor apartment of a four-unit building at 61st Street and 21st Ave. People in the area smelled smoke, spotted the fire and called in the alarm around 9:45.

Brian Dail, who'd been visiting a friend in the area, says he ran up the stairs and through the smoke saw a small child on a couch. He grabbed the girl and carried her outside.

Structural damage was confined to the kitchen, but the entire building sustained smoke and water damage. Tenants from all four units were displaced. The Red Cross was called in to help find alternate shelter.

The cause of the blaze is under investigation.
