KSB to Reconsider Bradford Stadium Name

Kenosha--In the face of public pressure, a school board member who voted with the majority in naming the new stadium at Bradford High School after the board's first African-American member says she'll ask that the matter be reconsidered.

In a Facebook post, Rebecca Stevens said she hopes that some type of compromise can be reached.

On a 12-4 vote, an advisory committee recommended that the stadium be named after Mary D. Bradford, but the school board voted 3-2 Monday to call it the "Olen Arrington, Jr. Stadium."

That prompted an outcry and an online petition drive from some Bradford alumni who viewed the board vote as a travesty.

In her post, Stevens suggested that the stadium be called Bradford while the playing field be named the "Olen Arrington, Jr. Field." She also lamented that the naming controversy has overshadowed other positive developments in the district.

The school board will presumably reconsider the naming issues when all members are present.

The two members who were absent Tuesday have signaled that "Olen Arrington" would not have been their first choice for a stadium name.
