Kudos and a New Contract for KUSD's Superintendent

Kenosha---Based on comments made at Tuesday night's regularly-scheduled meeting of the Kenosha School Board, relations couldn't be better between Superintendent Sue Savaglio-Jarvis and all seven board members.

First, the board voted unanimously to extend the superintendent's contract by another two years, adding a third year as an option. Then, one by one immediately following the vote, board members glowingly praised the superintendent's leadership abilities, work ethic and relations with students, staff, parents and board members. "She's honest. She is fair," said Board President Tamarra Coleman, adding that she communicates effectively with board members and is a hard worker, perhaps too hard.

Coleman jokingly added that the board had two directives for Savaglio-Jarvis--take vacations once in awhile and stop sending emails in the middle of the night. The comments drew laughter--and from her administrative staff, applause.

Savaglio-Jarvis' salary will remain at $195,000 annually. Money was never an issue in the closed discussions that occurred between the board and superintendent, according to Coleman.

Savaglio-Jarvis is a Kenosha native who served as a teacher and building principal in the district before taking on the job of superintendent, a tough gig in any district that often times ends badly for the holder.

The last person to hold the position of KUSD superintendent on a permanent basis--Michele Hancock--left under a cloud that included a contract buyout.
