Legal Glitch Holds Up Development of a City of Kenosha Facebook Page

Many municipalities have Facebook pages, but not Kenosha. And the city is not likely to have a Facebook page anytime soon.

A member of a commission that’s been studying the prospect, Ald. Anthony Kennedy, tells his council colleagues that he believes many municipal Facebook pages are simply unlawful. "How could the city of Racine be breaking the law? How could the city of Madison be breaking the law?," Kennedy asks rhetorically. "They all have a statement on there that says something to the effect that any comment left here is not a public record. That's not true."

Facebook comments must all be searchable and archivable, according to Kennedy, who adds that that's something easier said than done.

Despite the challenges, Kenosha’s Social Media Commission is expected to continue to meet.
