Elkhorn---The man shot and killed by law enforcement officers during a traffic stop Thursday evening has been identified as 26 year-old Kris Kristl of Lake Geneva.
According to a joint news release from the Walworth County Sheriff's Dept. and the Elkhorn Police Dept., Kristl was pulled over on County Highway "H" just south of the Gateway Technical College campus around 7:30 p.m. after authorities received a report of reckless driving in the area.
The release says Kristl was shot and died. An Elkhorn officer and a deputy were involved. Authorities aren't releasing any other information.
Per standard operating procedure in such cases, the state Division of Criminal Investigation was called in to investigate and the officers who were involved were placed on administrative leave.
The deputy had been with the Walworth County Sheriff's Dept. for two years, although he has a total of six years of law enforcement experience. The Elkhorn officer has been with that department for about eight years.
Online court records indicate that Kristl has a long history of contacts with police. Arrests and convictions for mostly traffic offenses are scattered throughout Walworth, Racine and Kenosha counties.
