Somers---Jim Chambers, a lifelong resident of Grand Rapids, Michigan, has an unlikely addiction. An addiction he traveled to the new Festival Foods in Somers to satisfy. For the past 30 years, Jim has traveled across the United States to locate over-sized items such as large mailboxes, roadside logos, larger than life signage, and now an over-sized shopping cart featured prominently in the parking lot of Festival Foods. Jim has traveled to more than two dozen over-sized attractions since retiring.
The Festival Foods located at 6000 31st Street in Somers, opened July 22nd and is the current home of the over-sized cart. The cart is usually parked at stores that have just opened. There’s no guarantee how long the cart will be at the Somers location. “I have been tracing it down on the internet for a while; these items are a draw and people don’t know it.” Jim stated.
The family is also in on the act. Jim’s son in law, Jeremy Kelly, traveled with him this week for a baseball tournament for his son in Kenosha. “I’ve been married to Jim’s Daughter for 16 years and I send him photos of cool things to check out; He’s been doing this as long as I can remember.” “It’s an addiction for Jim.”
Jim’s advice to tourists, “when you're heading out on vacation, look at the stuff in between along the way.”
