Milestones Marked in Foxconn Development

Some of the people responsible for bringing Foxconn to Mt Pleasant paused Thursday to celebrate their progress.

A round of speeches was had at a podium set up in front of a Case excavator in a former farm field.

Gilbane---the general contractor---announced that the first contracts were awarded for initial site work---including mass excavation, storm water management, and erosion control.

As previously reported---90% of the sub-contractors hired are from Wisconsin. Of that number, 10% are from Racine County and 10% are minority-owned.

The subcontractors weren't identified Thursday.

Adam Jelen---Senior Vice President of Gilbane---said nearly 4 million yards of dirt will be moved.

Now that construction is underway---Racine Mayor Cory Mason says that inclusive hiring is priority number one amid controversy that the most vulnerable in the city of Racine could miss out on construction jobs.

Jelen added that around 400 workers will be needed to complete work on the first phase of the Foxconn complex. That work is scheduled to begin this weekend.
