UPDATED 11a
Mt. Pleasant---Police spotted the thieves who've been breaking into auto dealerships and stealing vehicles, but they got away in an early-morning chase.
It began just after 2 a.m. Wednesday with an officer reporting two dark colored vehicles westbound at high speed near Highway H. The pursuit eventually got to the frontage road, and then the Interstate, with speeds topping 115-miles an hour with Mount Pleasant Police and a Racine County Sheriff deputy trying to keep up. The headlights on BOTH vehicles were off as the drivers maneuvered around traffic.
For safety reasons, the chase was then terminated.
Officers later discovered that the Hyundai dealership in Sturtevant had been entered, with the thieves making their getaway by driving the stolen vehicles straight through the dealership's windows.
The overnight theft marked the 5th dealership in the Mt. Pleasant area that's been entered. It's believed that a Milwaukee street gang is responsible. A 13 year-old boy was arrested recently in Racine County as he was driving a vehicle that had just been stolen.
