Next 'Big Read' Book in Kenosha: "Into the Beautiful North"

Kenosha---The next ‘Big Read’ book project in the greater Kenosha area begins March 1st.

“Into the Beautiful North” is the title of the book that’ll be fully explored through a series of discussions, lectures, film screenings, art projects and more.

Speaking on WGTD’s Morning Show, Big Read coordinator Jennifer Meixelsperger said the book focuses on a young adult living in Mexico and her group of friends who become concerned that their small town is losing population and in danger of being overrun by a drug gang. Inspired by a recent viewing of the Yule Brenner classic, "The Magnificent Seven," they set out to cross the border and round up their own group of saviors.

"We were really pleased with some of the themes that were coming out of this book," Meixelsperger said. Those themes include enriching communities, building families and encouraging female leadership.

The book’s author, Luis Alberto Urrea, will cap a month-long series of Big Read events with an appearance here on April 1st.

For a complete listing of events, go to the Kenosha Public Library’s web site.

Free copies of the book are available at a number of locations in the Kenosha area.
