(WGTD)---No charges will be filed in the December, 2018 shooting death of Douglas Stelter, a 25-year-old ex-Marine from Kenosha who died while driving on Highway 50 in Pleasant Prairie.
Police and the Kenosha County District Attorneys’ office have closed the investigation with the finding that the death was accidental.
The Kenosha County Medical Examiner’s office came to a slightly different conclusion. “Undetermined” is what’s listed on the death certificate.
Stelter and a passenger, described by Pleasant Prairie Police Chief David Smetana as someone who had a past relationship with the victim, were approaching the intersection of 50 and Green Bay Rd. when a gun inside the vehicle went off. Stelter suffered a head wound and was flown to a Milwaukee hospital where he died a few days later.
The passenger told investigators that both she and Stelter had been handling the gun, and the discharge was unwanted.
The woman’s story was corroborated by some of the physical evidence.
