Old Home on Kenosha's Simmons Island Heavily Damaged by Fire

(WGTD)---Fire heavily damaged a 120-year-old home on Simmons Island in Kenosha Wednesday morning.

No one was hurt, but firefighters had a hard time bringing the blaze under control because of the two-story home's balloon-style construction which allowed the blaze to travel unimpeded from the basement to the upper floor, a fire department official said.

The lone female occupant was home at the time and was alerted either by a passerby or a neighbor. She got out safely.

The fire is believed to have been caused by discarded smoking materials which then ignited the deck area of the home.

While the damage was most visible at the back of the house, the blaze damaged all three floors.

At one point, firefighters had to evacuate the first floor out of fear that the floor would collapse.
