Update: The man who allegedly stole the car with the 9-year-old boy sleeping inside has been identified as 58-year-old Michael Newhouse from Kenosha.
Just after two o'clock yesterday morning, in Pleasant Prairie, police got word that a rental car had been stolen from outside a gas station/convenience store, on Highway-50 at 118th Avenue, WITH a 9-year old boy sleeping in the back seat. That led to a frantic search by local law enforcement. The vehicle, at one point, was tracked to downtown Kenosha, near 8th Avenue and 56th Street, through a cellphone left inside the car by its renter.
Around 3am, the Lake County, Illinois Sheriff's Department reported that the vehicle had been stopped, the offender taken into custody, and the young boy was safe. The vehicle, according to initial reports, had been rented at O'Hare by a family on vacation. The car was left running went the dad went into the convenience store.
A 58-year-old Kenosha man is now being held in the Lake County Sheriff’s Department Jail pending extradition proceedings.
