Racine County: Foxconn Speculation Confirmed; Bolsters I-94 Argument

State Senator Van Wanggaard is confirming that Racine County is in the running for a Foxconn plant  as well as facilities from other major employers. The fact gives legislators extra ammunition in their fight to persuade Gov. Walker to finish I-94 expansion through the county.

The Racine Republican talked to reporters following a Wednesday meeting with Walker on transportation issues. Wanggaard said he left the session in an upbeat mood, saying Walker realizes the importance of the I-94 project, even with the tight transportation budget.

Wanggaard said that big development projects along the I-94 corridor in the county are less likely to occur without the proper infrastructure. "We're looking at billions of dollars of economic development that is on the threshold right now," he said. "But they (prospective employers) need to have certainty that the infrastructure is there so they can bring their products and employees in and out."

The Racine County Board has held several closed-sessions in recent weeks on economic development issues, leading to speculation that Racine County was preparing a potential site for Foxconn, the Taiwan-based electronics company that has said it wants to build a large plant in the U.S.
