Racine County Sheriff is the Target of a Phone Scam

Even county sheriffs aren't immune from phone scams.

Racine County Sheriff Christopher Schmaling recently received a call from someone claiming to represent the Internal Revenue Service.

When the caller claimed that the IRS had issued a warrant against him for tax fraud, Schmaling identified himself and the person on the other end hung up immediately, according to a news release from the sheriff's dept.

The department advises that the IRS won't call individuals about taxes without prior contact. Also, the agency will not demand immediate payment. Nor will it demand payment by a specific method or to a third party.

Often times the con artists will alter their caller ID to make it appear that their calls are coming from the federal government.
