Racine County Sheriff's Deputy Rescues Man from Union Grove House Fire

A fire in Union Grove early Monday morning sent one man to the hospital---and---destroyed a home in the 1200 block of High Street.

Racine County Sheriff’s Deputy Eric Schneider was among the first to respond to a 911 call from a neighbor just before 5am. The neighbor said he saw flames coming from windows.

The deputy opened an unlocked sliding door leading to the basement---and---smoke poured out. He yelled into the home---but---no one responded.

While checking another door the deputy saw a male exit the house through the sliding door.

That person turned out to be the homeowner who said his wife was still in the house.

Schneider then checked the basement where he found another man lying on the floor---barely breathing and unresponsive.  The deputy dragged the man up the stairs and out of the house to safety. He did regain consciousness and was later taken to a hospital where he was treated and released.

The wife was later found at another home. The male homeowner refused medical attention on the scene.

The cause of the fire is still unknown. The Racine County Arson Task Force was called in to investigate.
