(WGTD)---Spirits are high at Racine’s Reefpoint Marina, the largest Lake Michigan marina in Wisconsin.
A long-waited revitalization project has begun with the demolition of some of the 40-year-old slips at the county-owned facility.
The Racine County Board got an update on the project last month from marina manager Carrie Reid. "The marina was built in 1987. It was built with a 25-year life expectancy. We're at year 40," Reid noted. "There are multiple issues currently at the marina including deteriorating docks and the slip mix is wrong," she said. There's a shortage of slips for larger boats and a surplus for the smaller ones.
Reefpoint has over 900 slips, with less than a 10% vacancy rate. Reid says Reefpoint boaters are excited. "This has been a long time coming in their eyes," she said. "And they're very much in support and excited to see the progress that's happening.
The four-year-long project will cost over $30 million, but the marina management company is actively seeking grants.
In addition to the new docks, other infrastructure improvements include new electrical hook-ups and high-speed fuel pumps. One of the docks will be designated for non-boaters to walk out on and sightsee.
