(WGTD)---A ceremonial ground-breaking was held Tuesday for a high-end apartment complex to be located on a prime piece of real estate in Somers.
The 240 units are going up on land in the northwest quadrant of Green Bay Rd. and Highway ‘E.’
Illinois-based developer Ravine Park Partners said all of the apartments will be market rate, and the complex will feature a club house, pool and both a car and dog wash.
Somers Village President George Stoner said he's excited about the project, noting that it'll be the second large apartment complex in the village, right behind Market Square, located near Sam's Club and Festival Foods.
Greg Moyer, one of the developers of the new complex, said he believes "Hawthorn Apartments" will be successful with or without nearby Foxconn. He said work on the project actually began before Foxconn was announced.
Meanwhile, apartments that are located within the former Kenosha Youth Foundation building in downtown Kenosha are all full.
Illinois-based developer David Nankin, who’s tackled a number of projects over the years in the Kenosha area, says he’s not surprised by the quick sell out, given the shortage of housing, the building's historic nature and its location.
Seven of the 49 apartments at the Residences at Library Park go for market rate while 42 were rented at below market rates because state tax credits were used in the construction. The so-called ‘affordable housing’ apartments give tenants a slight price break.
Nankin’s past projects include Station Side Village near the Metra station, and he’s also involved in Hawthorn Apartments.
