(WGTD)---A newborn found to be in good health was turned over to Racine firefighters Sunday via the Safe Haven Baby Box that's mounted on the side of the Washington Ave. fire station.
It's the second time that the box has been used since it was installed two years ago, thanks to a $20,000 donation from the Knights of Columbus.
The climate-controlled and ventilated box is hooked up to an alarm that sounds when the door opens.
The alarm on Sunday came at about 1 p.m., according to a news release from the fire department.
On-duty firefighters and emergency medical personnel immediately assessed and cared for the baby girl. She was transported to Ascension All Saints hospital for evaluation, and is now in custody of child support services, where the process of identifying a permanent adoptive home will begin, the release said.
Wisconsin's Safe Haven law allows parents to legally and anonymously surrender their unharmed newborn up to 30 days old without fear of prosecution.
The release praised the parent for using the box. "We are thankful that this parent chose a safe option and that this baby is now receiving the care and protection they deserve," the release said. "Resources like the Safe Haven Baby Box exist to prevent tragedy."
