(WGTD)---There's been a larger than expected drop in enrollment at Kenosha Unified as the new school year begins.
The official third Friday count comes in at 17,029--a drop of 770 students from last year. The decrease is 442 students lower than projected in February.
The district says the drop is primarily associated with a long-term decline in the birth rate, along with increased transfers to non-KUSD educational programs and decreased participation in early grade-level offerings.
Enrollment is critical to the level of state aid.
District spokesperson Tanya Ruder says in light of the unexpected rate of decline the district is looking at possible staffing adjustments. That's a difficult exercise because the decline is widely spread over grade levels and schools.
