(WGTD0---An 18 year-old Racine man is facing a charge of hit and run after his car struck a toddler who'd been in an alley. The two year-old girl is being treated for a collapsed lung at Children's Hospital in Milwaukee.
Luis Martinez is being held on a $3,000 bond.
According to the criminal complaint, surveillance video captured Martinez' car driving over the child in an alley in the 700 blk. of Randolph St. Friday, Sept. 11.
Martinez was arrested a short time later, and reportedly admitted to investigators that he'd been driving in the alley. He said he stopped after hearing the crying of a child. While not witnessing the accident, the toddler's aunt is quoted as saying a man carried the child to her and said, before quickly leaving, that the toddler had fallen down. He didn't say anything about having hit the child.
The toddler's mother drove the child to the hospital.
In addition to hit and run, Martinez was charged with driving while suspended. The complaint quotes Martinez as saying he honestly didn't believe that he had hit the toddler.
