(WGTD) ---The attorney for the man who shot and killed Racine basketball standout Koreem Ozier says his client acted in the defense of his life and that of his friend.
23 year-old Collin Wallace was charged Monday with 1st Degree Intentional Homicide and bail jumping. A court commissioner set bond at $500,000, the amount that had been requested by a prosecutor.
The criminal complaint sites video from a surveillance camera and witness statements.
According to the complaint: The fatal shooting began as a minor traffic incident in front of a store at 12th and Memorial a week ago Sunday. Ozier pulls up just as a car driven by Justin Millard is backing up. Ozier sounded his horn to ward off a potential collision. That's when the occupants of both cars empty out and heated discussions begin. Two fights break out. A man in a red hoodie throws a punch at Wallace. Ozier and Millard start posturing. Ozier tackles Millard. Wallace is seen pulling out an object from his waistband while people around him flee. Wallace walks up to Ozier and fires twice, hitting him in the chest and the side of the head. Ozier dies at the scene. Wallace, Millard and an unidentified female leave the scene.
In court Monday, Wallace's attorney, Pat Cafferty, said the complaint shows that Wallace was protecting himself and Millard. "There is clear evidence within the four corners of the compliant that...the alleged victim and others attacked Mr. Wallace and Mr. Millard and if the facts are to be believed Mr. Wallace was acting to protect himself and Mr. Millard," Cafferty said.
Millard was charged Monday with aiding a felon. A $50,000 bond was set.
