Train Hits Stalled Tractor-Trailer in Camp Lake

Updated 10p

Camp Lake---The freight train that smashed into a tractor-trailer that got hung up on the tracks at a crossing apparently made contact at a relatively slow speed, according to Salem Lakes Fire Chief Mike Slover.

"It made every effort to stop," Slover said of the train. Still, the lead engine rammed the low-riding flatbed at about 25 m.p.h.

The impact was enough to separate the tractor from the trailer, and knock over a piece of construction equipment that had been on the trailer.

No one was injured.

The accident occurred at a crossing near 104th St. and 268th Ct. Tuesday afternoon.

All of the train cars remained upright and none leaked. Eleven were said to be carrying hazardous materials. Sections of track were damaged, Slover said.

The stalled train blocked a number of crossings in the area and made moving in and out of nearby subdivisions difficult.
