UW-P Receives Big Donation for Music Student Scholarships

Somers---A $100,000-plus donation to fund scholarships for UW-Parkside music students has been made by a Racine couple, David Beach and Carmen Rigau.

Beach is an associate professor emeritus of psychology and Rigau is a former school counselor. Both are active community volunteers and strong supporters of UW-P's music department.

“We each were aided and guided by others throughout our early lives," the pair said in a statement. "Establishing these scholarships honors and perpetuates their kindness. Also, we are both deeply committed to promoting social justice through education, and to quality musical performance.  Providing financial assistance to UW-Parkside music students fuses and furthers those core values.”

The value of the endowed scholarship has been automatically doubled by a matching fund established by Frances M. Bedford, a retired Parkside music professor.

The resulting Beach-Rigau Gift of Music Endowed Scholarship will be the largest endowed scholarship to date to be used exclusively by UW-Parkside music students.
