(WGTD)---As discussion over racism heats up in the wake of the in-police-custody death of George Floyd, a 78-year-old Pleasant Prairie man has been charged with hate crimes for cursing at an African-American woman, and using the n-word in a parking lot altercation over a shopping cart.

Robert D. Carver has been summoned to appear in Kenosha court June 17th to be formally charged with disorderly conduct and endangering safety with hate crime enhancers that increase the maximum penalties.

According to the criminal complaint, Cassandra Harris was maneuvering her shopping cart in the crowded parking lot of Menard’s the morning of June 2nd and stopped at a light pillar.

Carver allegedly told her not to leave the cart there and called her “lazy” and used the racial epithet.

Harris spoke up in her defense, purportedly telling Carver, who is white, that he had no right to talk to her like that.

According to the complaint, Carver continued to call her names then got into his SUV. Carver quickly accelerated toward Harris, who had to jump out of the way.

A witness who heard the commotion confronted Carver and pounded on his window.  Carver then drives off.

Part of the incident was captured on video and has over thirty-thousand views on Facebook.
