Teachers Mix Technology With Creative Learning Methods During Pandemic

(WGTD)---Schools may be closed because of the pandemic, but that doesn’t mean teaching and learning have ground to a halt.

For example, Kenosha Unified has launched a more formalized, non-graded, online instruction program. High school students, for instance, are expected to spend an hour a week on materials prepared by each one of their teachers.

And at Gateway Technical College, all classes are in session, online of course.

In the nursing field, a virtual teaching system that faculty had dabbled with in the past is now in full play, according to Vicki Hulback, Dean of Gateway’s School of Health. "It's almost like a gaming system," Hulback said. "Our students are doing really great with it."

A student nurse may virtually walk into a patient's room, administer medications, perform an assessment, read charts and interact with the patient. Teachers are then able to go back and review a transcript of the student's interactions.

In addition to the virtual simulation, nursing department faculty has come up with household items that can be used as teaching tools.

While all this doesn’t take the place of clinical experiences, students are expected to graduate on time this spring.

Hulback says she never imagined that so much learning could take place online.
