(WGTD)---It’s slow-going for the commission that’s trying to save a treasured downtown Kenosha landmark.
The current owners of the former Eagles Club want to sell it after a water pipe burst a couple of winters ago. They say that even with insurance the damage is too costly to repair.
Some members of the city’s Historic Preservation Commission aren’t yet ready to sign on to the building’s demolition.
At a meeting last week, there were encouraging signs that the building’s owners are willing to actively work with the commission.
There were a couple of dead ends, however. City administration is apparently unwilling to finance a $12,000 reuse study. Nor are they apparently willing to take the lead in putting out a Request for Proposals to developers who might be interested in preserving the building. Such an RFP could conceivably include a couple of city-owned parcels that are adjacent to the building.
The discussion is expected to continue next month.
